In 1940, the Ministry of Education of the REPUBLIC of China appropriated one million yuan to the Jiangxi Provincial government to establish National Chung Cheng University in Taihe Xingling, named after Chiang Kai-shek (the foundation stone is laid that the university is named after the national leader of Our nation, namely Chiang Chung Cheng).   

On August 15, 1945, When Japan surrendered unconditionally, The university moved to Wangchenggang, Nanchang.   

In September 1949, national Chung Cheng University was renamed National Nanchang University. It was still a national comprehensive university under the direct administration of the South-central Ministry of Education
